Chalkboard Mug | a DIY gift

Can I just say that this is a pinterest DIY that actually works? It's a really easy project and makes a great non-expensive gift idea. I made this for a friend's birthday and I know I'd love to receive something like this as a gift.

I painted a small rectangle on the side of my mug, but you can do it however you'd like - paint the whole outside of the mug, half of the mug, a band around it, or a circle on the side, whatever you want. Just be sure to include instructions to hand wash the mug with your gift to keep it looking its best.

Continue reading for the full instructions!

What you'll need:
A ceramic mug (I bought mine at Hobby Lobby with one of their 40% off coupons!)
Chalkboard paint
Masking tape
A paintbrush
Chalk
(optional) a cup of hot chocolate to sip while you paint

Tape off the area where you want the chalkboard section to be, then start painting.

Depending on the instructions on your chalkboard paint, you may need to wait a different amount of time between coats of paint. After I finished the first coat, I removed the tape and let it dry for an hour before I put on the second coat.

After the second coat of paint, I let it set for 24 hours.

After the paint has set, prep the chalkboard by chalking the whole area, then wipe it off with a soft, dry cloth.

And you're finished! Write a fun message or an initial on your mug and enjoy a warm drink. If you try this I'd love to see your mug!
